I'm Marc Showers

Building Code Consultant
Celerity Engineering Ltd.
Victoria, BC

What is your current job role and building code experience?

I have been a code consultant at Celerity Engineering since 2015, and am involved in projects in all stages of the design and construction process.

As a code consultant, I am an expert in Part 3 of the British Columbia, Vancouver, and National Building Codes. I regularly complete Part 3 plan reviews for complex buildings and prepare alternative solution approaches to code compliance.

What impact do you hope to have at Kilo Lima?

I hope that by sharing my knowledge of building codes, designers and builders will gain confidence and feel empowered to work with the building code from initial design through completion.

I want to be part of a community that will inspire conversations on complex building code issues.

What are the biggest challenges facing the building code industry today?

Collaboration and coordination. Complexity in construction is constantly increasing, due to a wider variety of materials available and construction methods being used. Innovation and collaboration help support design expression, energy performance, cost, and construction timelines. To support these endeavors, the industry is becoming more specialized.

More than ever, early collaboration and coordination are key to a successful project.

“More than ever, early collaboration and coordination are key to a successful project.”

What project or initiative have you heard about lately that really inspires you?

I am inspired by the mass timber initiative in British Columbia, due to its reduced environmental impact relative to other construction methods and how it is challenging the status quo in our Building Codes.

Due to my background in mechanical engineering, I am also interested in how the advanced manufacturing methods associated with this technology will shape the construction industry in the years ahead.

WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT OUTSIDE THE OFFICE?

I enjoy connecting with others through activities – sports, games, music. Baseball is a big passion of mine, both playing and watching.

I enjoy the mental exercise and competition of games with friends and family.
