How to Calculate Interconnected Floor Space Volume for Mechanical Exhaust Systems?

If you enjoyed this post, we encourage you to share!

The NBC/BCBC/VBBL have requirements for a mechanical exhaust system in Article 3.2.8.7. if the prescriptive requirements for interconnected floors are being met. This requires that the air is removed at 4 air changes per hour.

Note: The OBC requirements are vastly different for interconnected floors

My question is: what volume of air is used in the calculation? Is it the entire floor? Can I exclude areas separated with a smoke separation?
