Party Walls and Appendix D

If you enjoyed this post, we encourage you to share!

I have a building code question related to party walls in a side-by-side home or duplex. I am using wall number W13 with additional resilient channels on both sides of the assembly with a single layer of 5/8” type-X drywall.

When calculating fire-resistance using appendix-D, sentence D-2.3.4.1, requires to reduce the rating of the assembly by 10 minutes. Then, I would assume the 5/8″ Type-x provide 40 minutes time, and studs provide 20 minutes time, but then the addition of resilient channel changes the total time assigned to 50 minutes, and the assembly won’t meet minimum 1 hour rating.

My question is: Can someone provide any comments if I am in the right direction?

  1. Your logic seems correct to me.

As sound transmission is also of concern, we usually see W13a in this scenario.
