Kilo’s Notes: Vol. 1, No. 1, October 18, 2021

If you enjoyed this post, we encourage you to share!

Happy Monday!

The thought of a newsletter to summarize what we’re up to at Kilo has been percolating for a while. If you know me personally, you know I’m not about secrecy or competition. I am an open book and have a fundamental belief in abundance. The more we share knowledge and ideas, the better our world gets…which is only better for you and everyone you love!

I sprinkle my thoughts on where Kilo is going through my various long winded posts, but realize that they aren’t effective in sharing our plans for a few reasons. One being that many people are busy and don’t have time to read a novel camouflaged as a blog post, and second that many people have short attention spans. And thirdly, some people just don’t want to hear what I have to say…but do want to know about the industry bottom-up revolution we’re starting because it affects business. Wherever you fit, we get it…and still welcome your input! We truly value your feedback.

The goal of Kilo’s Notes is to be able to read the update in a few minutes. I’m not sure how frequently they will be posted, nor do I want to commit to a schedule. When there is the urge to share what we’re up to, I’ll write and share!

So here we go. I want to hear your thoughts. Comment in the post, reach out to us through our contact page, or message me directly at [email protected].

Burns on Fire

A month or so ago, we launched Burns on Fire. We appreciate our OG Villager/No 1 Fan Jim Burns so much, and thought we could do something for him by creating him his own space on the site. You’ll find all Jim’s Kilo Lima posts, as well as his Burns on Fire posts in 1.3 Burns on Fire under 1.0 Community from the main website page.

Community Calendar

A big shout out to my Co-Founder Brenda, who got the Community Calendar up and running a few weeks ago. If you’d like to be notified of what is happening each week without having to check the website, you can subscribe to our weekly newsletter here.

If you have an event you’d like added to the calendar, please email it to [email protected]. We are figuring out how organizations can add their own events…so hang tight!

Villager Recruitment

I can’t say thank you enough to all our current Villagers, and the ones who are waiting to be added to the site and schedule (I didn’t forget, I promise!). We are currently full for bloggers on Building and Fire Codes, but are looking for a few specialized experts. If you, or someone you know, would like to share their knowledge through our community blog please reach out! The areas of expertise we are currently in need of are:

We are also looking for specific user groups to add in their perspective. If you are one of the following and would like to share your Code related knowledge/experience/challenges, please reach out!

  • Developers,
  • Building Owners,
  • Systems Designers (electrical, mechanical, and fire protection),
  • Authority Having Jurisdiction,
  • Contractors, and
  • Product manufacturers.

Grey Matter Database

Slowly but surely, I’m getting information together for the database which I’ve been talking about since Kilo Lima became a thing. The gist of it is that it will be a place to find all the interpretations/appeals/blogs/resources/etc tied to a specific provision. Curious about the intent and interpretation of penetrations in exits (3.4.4.4.(1))? Me too! You’ll be able to enter the provision and see what the web holds in terms of what others have thought/researched. It seems extremely inefficient to me that everyone is googling the same thing…and I don’t like inefficient if there is a solution!

The database will be for the community, by the community. We will get it started with a first sample of data, but will rely on community effort to get the thing rolling. We are still working out how appropriate credit will be shared. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Champion Program

I have come to terms with the fact that I can’t live off of love and dreams in today’s world….and I have a lot of dreams for Kilo that I am going to make happen! We are starting a beta for our Kilo Lima Champions (essentially a sponsorship program but a lot cooler) to run for three months, after which we will re-assess to see where we’d like to take it.

We started Kilo in April, 2020, and have been completely self-funded. A wise person once told me that “money is society’s way of saying thank you”. If you appreciate what we do, and would like to say thank you to Kilo through financial support and are curious to know more about the beta, please reach out to me at [email protected]. I only have two ‘rules’ for the beta. They are:

  • Keeping the group small to get meaningful feedback, with up to 5 potential partners, and
  • I am a people person, and I have high expectations for humans. I am only looking for sponsorship from people and organizations who I believe in. If you are a human who believes in improving the industry for the greater good, I’d love to hear from you!

Until next time friends,

KL
